Almost before the ink was dry late last week on the monster contracts signed by free agents Julius Peppers, Chester Taylor and Brandon Manumaleuna, fans wondered how the Bears could upgrade the free safety position.Bears coach Lovie Smith has been wondering the same thing since the 2009 season ended."We need to improve our safety position, period," Smith said. Restricted free agent safety Josh Bullocks has signed his one-year tender offer from the Chicago Bears. Bullocks made four starts and appeared in 12 games with the Bears last season, finishing with 21 tackles -- 14 in the last two games -- and five special teams stops. He has 327 tackles, six interceptions and 28 pass breakups in five seasons with the Bears and New Orleans Saints.

Fullback Eddie Williams has signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears. Drafted in the seventh round by Washington last year, he spent most of the season on the Redskins' practice squad before being elevated to the active roster Nov. 2. He was inactive for three games before being placed on injured reserve with a broken leg in late November.

A person with knowledge of the negotiation says Vikings running back Chester Taylor has agreed to a four-year, $12.5 million contract with division rival Chicago that includes $7 million in guaranteed money. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced by the Bears.
